Risk notes
The Form 1000 nominator is the real gate. Without someone nationally recognised in your field willing to attest to your record, there is no application.
You cannot apply unprompted. The Department must invite you, and once invited you have only 60 days to lodge.
There is no age limit, but applicants under 18 or aged 55 and over must additionally be of exceptional benefit to the Australian community.
The old Global Talent Independent programme no longer exists; the National Innovation visa replaced it on 6 December 2024.
Compliance
Home Affairs published service standard for the National Innovation stream: 6 months for 50% of applications, 7 months for 90%. Legacy Distinguished Talent and Global Talent (Independent) applications lodged before 6 December 2024 run at 16 and 24 months. The headline timeline on this page is XIPHIAS's own observed average, which includes the nominator and invitation stages.
This visa was renamed and restructured on 6 December 2024, when the Migration Amendment (National Innovation Visa) Regulations 2024 commenced. 'Global Talent visa' is no longer a valid name for it.
There is no points test and no occupation list for this visa.
Applications are processed in the order set by Ministerial Direction No. 120.
There is no government charge for the Form 1000 nomination.
The Global Talent Employer Sponsored scheme still exists, but it is not a subclass 858 product. It is an employer agreement that feeds the Skills in Demand (subclass 482) visa.

Not under that name. On 6 December 2024 it was renamed and restructured as the National Innovation visa (subclass 858). The old Global Talent Independent programme is gone, and the old Home Affairs page now redirects to the National Innovation visa.
